FON100: Introductory Nutrition – 3 credits

Introduction to the science of food and human nutrition. Current sustainable dietary recommendations and applications for maximizing well-being and minimizing risk of chronic disease throughout the life cycle. An overview of the nutrients, emphasizing the importance of energy and fluid balance, and optimal functioning of the digestive system. Understanding factors that influence food intake in different cultures. Methods for evaluating credibility of nutrition claims, a focus on modern food safety and technology practices, and a worldview of nutrition are included. Emphasis is on personal dietary behavior change for a holistic life of wellness. Prerequisites: None.

FON246AA: Community Nutrition Practicum – 2 credits

Classroom preparation and training, under the instruction of a registered dietitian. Understanding of principles, knowledge and skills required in the delivery of nutrition services in community-based agencies, outpatient health care settings, and social service agencies. Includes knowledge and understanding of nutrition intervention and wellness promotion for individuals and groups across the lifespan, i.e. infants through geriatrics with a diversity of cultural, religious and social backgrounds. Note: Students must be in compliance with the Maricopa Community Colleges Allied Health Program Student Policies. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in (FON125 and FON242) and permission of Program Director. Corequisites: FON246AB.

Ethical issues, standards, and philosophical consideration of moral problems encountered in fire service. Ethical responsibility of fire service personnel and those they serve. Prerequisites: None.

HES120: Principles of Physical Fitness and Wellness – 3 credits

Stress basic, lifetime health and skill-related components of fitness to achieve total wellness. Topics include nutrition, weight control, exercise and aging, cardiovascular and cancer risk reduction, stress management, prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, substance abuse control, and overall management of personal health and lifestyle habits to achieve the highest potential for well-being. Prerequisites: None.

HWC101: Health and Wellness Coaching – 3 credits

Provides the foundational practical skills for the application of the appropriate structure and processes of health and wellness coaching. Fundamental techniques and concepts used in coaching to establish effective coach-client partnerships, build trust and rapport, assess client readiness, and ensure ethical and professional considerations in coaching. Satisfies components of the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching requirements.
Prerequisites: None. It is recommended that HES100 be completed prior to or concurrent with this course.

HWC290: Health and Wellness Coaching Internship – 1 credit

Work-based experience in health and wellness coaching. Eighty hours of designated work per credit. Note: HWC290 may be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in HES100 and HWC101.

NCE150: Advanced Placement: Nurse Assisting – 2 credits

Prepares the advanced placement nursing assistant student for the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification or Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) examination. The student will care for clients across the wellness/illness continuum within the scope of practice of the CNA/LNA. Includes basic problem solving processes specific to meeting the basic and holistic needs of clients, therapeutic communication skills, as well as interventions to ensure the needs and safety of the client. Provides opportunity for the student to show proficiency in the performance of basic nursing assistant skills and procedures through laboratory activities and participation in the care of clients. Licensing is the exclusive responsibility of the Arizona State Board of Nursing. Prerequisites: One year full-time employment OR two years part-time employment of direct patient care within the past five years OR students who have successfully completed course work that included direct patient care experiences in allied health, medicine or nursing in the past five years, OR permission of the Division Chairperson.

NUR106: Nursing Theory and Science Transition (Paramedic Bridge) – 9 credits

Introduction and utilization of Nurse of the Future competencies to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes to provide safe, quality patient care across the wellness-illness continuum in selected medical-surgical and mental health patients. Basic care concepts and nursing process are utilized to meet the needs of adult and older adult patients. Note: NUR106 is intended for experienced paramedics seeking advanced placement to Maricopa Nursing. Prerequisites: (Arizona or National Paramedic Registry Certificate), acceptance into the Maricopa Nursing advanced placement, a grade of C or better in NUR187, and (one year current work experience utilizing Paramedic scope of practice or permission of Nursing Department Chairperson).

NUR158: Nurse Assisting – 4.5 credits

Introduction to the role of the nursing assistant for clients across the wellness/illness continuum within the nurse assisting scope of practice. Includes basic problem solving processes specific to meeting the basic and holistic needs of clients, therapeutic communication skills, interventions to ensure the needs and safety of the client, specific types of diseases, conditions and alterations in behavior of the client. Focus is on the special needs of the older adult client in the acute and long-term care settings, and basic care skills and procedures. Provides opportunity for the development of clinical competency in the performance of selected nurse assisting skills and procedures through participation in the care of clients. Note: NUR158 final admission requirements are determined by the Program Director and/or Division Chair and may be based on employer (partner) requirements if the student is employed by the requesting agency. NUR158 meets the application and admission requirements for MaricopaNursing programs. Prerequisites: Reading and math assessment as well as completion of all required Health and Safety documents.

Utilization of Nurse of the Future competencies and clinical judgment measures to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes to provide safe, quality patient care across the wellness-illness continuum in selected medical-surgical and mental health patients. NUR283: Nursing Theory and Science IV – 9 credits

Applies Nurse of the Future competencies and clinical judgment measures to practice and manage care for the child/family unit and adults requiring complex care throughout the wellness/illness continuum, and prepare for transition from student to professional nurse. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in (BIO205 and NUR252) or permission of Nursing Department Chair.

Learn the basics of designing and implementing a personalized fitness program to meet your needs in the areas of Cardiovascular Fitness, Weight Control, Muscular Strength and Flexibility. Prerequisites: None. Note: PED101FL may be repeated for credit.

PED101ST: Strength Training – 1 credit

Introduction to techniques of basic weight training, concentrating on incorporating an exercise regimen for increased strength. Prerequisites: None. Note: PED101ST may be repeated for credit.

PED102WW: Weight Training for Women - Intermediate – 1 credit

Designed to advance the resistance training routines of more experienced students in a progressive fashion. Includes principles of and practice with the safe use of free and machine weights and Olympic lifts as well as strategies for effective workouts. Customized training programs devised with instructor guidance. Consideration of resistance training as part of a comprehensive health, fitness and wellness program included.

PED115: Lifetime Fitness – 2 credits

Increase personal fitness, strength, and vitality. Current principles of cardiovascular exercise, weight training, flexibility, and balance exercises applicable to lifetime fitness goals. Personalized fitness plans developed and implemented with support of highly trained fitness professionals. Techniques to make sessions more effective and enjoyable. Prerequisites: None. Note: PED115 may be repeated for a total of eight (8) credit hours.

PED117: Weight Training For Wellness – 2 credits

Strength training and muscular fitness activity to help develop a lifetime of regular exercise and muscular strength maintenance. Development of full-body strength and stability of the body's core musculature, translating to increased power, balance, and functional movement ability including assessment of current strength and goal-specific program design to increase strength and muscular fitness. Prerequisites: None. Note: PED117 may be repeated for a maximum of eight (8) credit hours.

PME280: Preparation for Paramedicine Practicum – 1 credit

Designed to provide an overview of Emergency Medical Service (EMS) systems, safety and wellness, resiliency, health, medical/legal and ethical issues, EMS communications, documentation, and crime scene awareness. Examines the Paramedic's roles and responsibilities to assure personal, patient, and public health and safety in the provision of professional emergency care. Prerequisites: Admission into the Paramedic Education Program.

PSY215: Sports Psychology – 3 credits

Application of the physiological, behavioral, social, cognitive, and humanistic perspectives in psychology to sport. Includes topics such as optimal performance, correlation, motivation, co-action effect, self-actualization, psycho-behavioral techniques, self-efficacy, and the general health benefits of sport participation.

SWU250: Mindfulness for Stress Management – 3 credits

Introduction to the theory, research and practice behind mindfulness and stress management as it relates to quality of life issues and professional self-care. Focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and managing personal/professional stress by incorporating evidence based research on nutrition, mindfulness, communication, positive psychology, exercise, environmental factors contributing to wellness and disease; immune system support, activity management and developing practices that facilitate maintaining living in balance. Prerequisites: None.

WED125: Reiki: Healing and Symbols – 2 credits

Introduction to Reiki as a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Instruction in the Usui method of Reiki and its symbols and applications to personal health and everyday life. Prerequisites: None. Note: WED125 may be repeated for a total of ten (10) credits.

WED126: Cupping Therapy – 1 credit

Introduction to cupping therapy for individuals in the field of massage therapy. In addition but not limited to the history, techniques and application in various therapeutic settings. Prerequisites: None. Note: WED126 may be repeated for credit.

History and application of specific pressure points on the hands and feet that have correlation to different body organs and systems. Practice of micromovement techniques with the goal of creating a response throughout the body.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid for the adult, child and infant patients includes Automated External Defibrillator (AED), rescue breathing, obstructed airway, and other first aid procedures. Designed to train citizen responders in skills and procedures required during emergency situation. Prerequisites: None.

Physiology of meditation and its effects on physical and mental health; scholastic abilities and interpersonal relationships; differentiation between meditation and other relaxation techniques. Prerequisites: None.

WED174: Myofascial Release – 1 credit

Introduction to myofascial release techniques and application. Myofascial Release (MFR) is a therapeutic modality that allows restricted fascia to release from a tightened state. MFR improves nerve conductivity and circulation of blood and lymph, which allows the healing powers of the body to flow to restricted tissues. The result is relief from chronic pain and the potential for healing injured tissue. Prerequisites: None.
