EED115: Digital Literacy for Teaching and Learning in Education – 3 credits

Overview of digital literacy for identifying the skills needed to become informed users of technology to communicate, instruct, create and think critically with digital tools. Explores how emerging technologies are used to teach and learn across varied educational environments (face-to-face, hybrid, online, etc). Includes skills focused on basic computer operations, productivity software, digital citizenship, instructional practices, information literacy and family and professional partnerships. Discusses current trends and related issues about the use of technology and its impacts in P20 education.

EED205: The Developing Child: Prenatal to Age Eight – 3 credits

Examination of process of physical, social, emotional, cognitive, language, and literacy development of typical and atypical young children; prenatal through age eight. Includes practical application and fieldwork experience. Prerequisites: None.

EED210: Creative and Cognitive Play – 3 credits

Benefits of play for children birth to 8 years of age. Inclusion of art, music, and movement used in all dimensions of play. Identify uses and roles in the development of children. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in CFS/ECH176, or CFS235, or EED205.

EED212: Guidance, Effective Interactions and the Environment – 3 credits

Principles for guiding young children in early care and education environments. Exploration of guidance, effective interactions, and how the environment impacts the lives of young children. Includes observation of children, birth to age eight. Prerequisites: None.

EED215: Early Learning: Health, Safety, Nutrition and Physical Fitness – 3 credits

Consideration of public health issues and safety procedures within early childhood settings that serve young children birth to age eight. Overview of nutritional needs and issues of physical fitness and well-being in young children. Includes practicum designed to explore the field of early childhood education. Prerequisites: None.

EED222: Introduction to the Exceptional Young Child: Birth to Age Eight – 3 credits

Overview of the exceptional learner (birth - age eight), one who differs from the average or the norm, with emphasis on observation, techniques, characteristics, identification, types of programs, and work with families. Issues related to learning exceptionalities, sensory and communication disorders, social and emotional problems, physical and health related disorders, and giftedness. Includes practicum designed to explore the field of early childhood education. Prerequisites: None.

EED225: Language and Literacy in the Context of Culture and Relationships – 3 credits

Introduces children's language acquisition and literacy development. Exploration of the relationships among language, literacy, family, culture, and community. Study of educational practices and advocacy opportunities that support language acquisition, literacy development and the preservation of heritage languages. Prerequisites: None.

EED255: Independent Study Portfolio Development and Writing for the Early Childhood Profession – 3 credits

Portfolio development, completion, and presentation skills designed for the individual student. Self-assessment and educational short-term and long-term planning, professional development, writing and critical learning included. Note: EED255 is a capstone course on Early Childhood Education pathways. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in completion of twelve (12) credit hours of EED Early Education coursework and permission of Program Coordinator.

EED260: Early Childhood Infant/Toddler Internship – 1 credit

Work experience with infants and toddlers in early care and education settings. Eighty (80) hours of designated work per credit. Note: May be repeated for a total of six (6) credit hours. Prerequisites: Permission of Department or Division.

EED261: Early Childhood Preschool Internship – 1 credit

Work experience with preschoolers in early care and education settings. Eighty (80) hours of designated work per credit. Note: May be repeated for a total of six (6) credit hours. Prerequisites: Permission of Department or Division.

EED278: Early Learning Curriculum and Instruction - Birth to Age Eight – 3 credits

Considerations and evaluations of curriculum appropriate to the developmental characteristics of learners, birth through eight years. Includes how early childhood standards, philosophies, and program settings relate to the teaching, learning, and assessment process. Includes field experience. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in EED200.

EED280: Standards, Observation and Assessment of Typical/Atypical Behaviors of Young Children Birth to Age 8 – 3 credits

Standards, observation, and assessment of typical and atypical behaviors, overview of standards, observation and assessment methodologies for typical and atypical young children (birth to age eight). Includes ethics, referral and reporting procedures, and collaboration with families and other professionals. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in CFS/ECH176, or CFS235, or EED205.
