BIO107: Introduction to Biotechnology – 4 credits

An introduction to laboratory techniques and their applications in biotechnology. Students will explore the broad impact of biotechnology on society including its global economic potential, medical, forensic, environmental and military applications, as well as the associated risks, ethical and legal issues that are shaping the field. Prerequisites: None.

  • This course is designed for majors and non-majors and it meets twice a week in the lab. You will learn the science behind CRISPR-Cas9 and how it revolutionized genetics, real-world applications in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology. You will perform guided novel research projects and you will design and perform in the lab to see CRISPR in action.

  • This course, designed for majors and non-majors, meets twice a week in the lab and will involve students in the national undergraduate research project SEA PHAGE, in collaboration with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Throughout the semester, students will participate in hands-on activities focused on discovering viruses in soil samples. This immersive experience aims to develop practical research skills and a great understanding of viral biology.
