EQS120: Equine Anatomy and Physiology – 4 credits

Study of structure and function of the equine. Includes cell structure, anatomy and physiology of major systems with emphasis on skeletal, muscular, and digestive systems. Incorporates detailed discussion and identification of various anatomical parts. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in EQS105 or permission of Department or Division.

EQS162: Equine and Stable Management I – 3 credits

Focus on daily stable operations in the care and management of horses. Practical experience in basic horse husbandry, horsemanship, and stable management. Development of ground handling skills and use of lunge line and round penning techniques. Topics include feeding, watering, stable sanitation, grooming, bathing, vaccines, parasite control, safety, horse behavior, health, wounds and their treatments, and record keeping. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in EQS105 or permission of Department or Division.

EQS195: Equine Therapies I – 3 credits

Designed to acquaint students with equine therapies for major muscle groups, the skeletal system and the hoof of the horse. The relationship that exists between the listed systems, equine locomotion and lameness problems will be discussed. Discussion, demonstration, and/or practical hands-on opportunities of equine therapy techniques will be focus of the class. Note: EQS195 is not designed to train or certify individuals to massage horses on a professional basis. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in EQS120 and EQS264, or permission of Department or Division.

EQS264: Equine and Stable Management II – 3 credits

Advanced practical experience in horse and stable management. Practical and supervisory experience in daily stable operations that increase skill and knowledge level in the care and management of horses. Topics include nutrition, diseases and their prevention, environmental issues parasite, pests and rodent control, safety, horse handling, wounds and their treatments, injury and treatments, inventory control, record keeping, and industry-standard operating procedures. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in EQS162, or permission of Department or Division.

EQS295: Equine Therapies II – 3 credits

Designed to train students with advanced equine therapy methods to relieve common conditions and pathologies for the musculoskeletal system. Identifying biomechanics, variations and abnormalities, muscle tension, joint stress, common injuries and lameness. Identifying and assessing the relationship between conformational flaws, range of motion and lameness as they align with the performance of specific disciplines. Discussion and demonstration with practical hands-on training of advanced equine therapy methods. Designed to train students to work in the field as an Equine Massage Practitioner with the ability to evaluate common conditions, and carry out a treatment plan, that will relieve muscle tension and pain, increasing circulation, flexibility and range of motion in the horse. Note: Certification is only obtained with a B or better in this course. EQS295 may be repeated for a total of six (6) credit hours. Prerequisites: A grade of B or better in EQS195 or permission of Department or Division.
