Theory and practice of interpersonal communication skills which affect day-to-day social interactions with other persons. May include using verbal and nonverbal symbols, active listening, resolving interpersonal conflict, understanding cultural perspectives, and developing and maintaining personal and professional relationships. Prerequisites: None.

ENG101: First-Year Composition – 3 credits

Emphasis on rhetoric and composition with a focus on expository writing and understanding writing as a process. Establishing effective college-level writing strategies through four or more writing projects comprising at least 3,000 words in total. Prerequisites: Appropriate writing placement test score, or (a grade of C or better in ESL097 or WAC101), or (a grade of B or better in ALT100), or (a grade of C in ALT100 and Corequisites: ENG101LL, or ENG107LL, or WAC101, or ENG100A+), or (a grade of C or better in ESL202 and Corequisites: ENG101LL, or ENG107LL, or WAC101, or ENG100A+).

ENG101LL: First-Year Composition Lab – 1 credit

Supplemental instruction for composition courses. Focus on developing effective writing processes to address a range of rhetorical situations. Prerequisites: Appropriate writing placement test score, or (a grade of C or better in ESL202. Corequisites: ENG101, or ENG107).

ESL022: ESL II-Writing With Oral Practice – 3 credits

Emphasis on basic writing skills, accompanied by recitation of short writings. Sentence patterns and introduction of paragraph writing. May be repeated for a maximum of six (6) credits. Prerequisites: Appropriate ESL course placement score, or a grade of C or better in ESL012, or permission of Instructor.

ESL036: Reading English as a Second Language III – 3 credits

Designed for students who are learning English as a second language. Instruction for more advanced vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. Prerequisites: Appropriate ESL placement test score, or grade of C or better in ESL026, or permission of Instructor.

ESL040: English as a Second Language IV: Grammar – 3 credits

Fourth level of English as a Second Language (ESL) grammar. Emphasis on verb forms, modals, participles, gerunds and infinitives, clauses, and paragraph writing. Note: ESL040 may be repeated for a total of six (6) credit hours. Credit (P) or no credit (Z). Standard grading available according to procedures outlined in catalog. Prerequisites: Appropriate ESL placement test score or a grade of P or C or better in ESL030.

ESL041: English as a Second Language IV: Listening and Speaking – 3 credits

Emphasis on academic skills. Listening to lectures, note-taking, peer interaction, accessing and using media resources, formal oral presentations. Note: ESL041 may be repeated for a total of six (6) credit hours. Prerequisites: Appropriate ESL placement test score, or a grade of C or better in ESL030, or ESL031, or ESL032, or ESL036.
