Overview of early childhood education (birth to age eight) in American society, including current issues and responsibilities. Emphasis on issues of professionalism, ethics and program types. Opportunities for students to explore potential career paths. Includes field experience. Prerequisites: None. Introduction to the Exceptional Young Child: Birth to Age Eight (EED222) 3 Credits

Overview of the exceptional learner (birth - age 5 eight), one who differs from the average or the norm, with emphasis on observation, techniques, characteristics, identification, types of programs, and work with families. Issues related to learning exceptionalities, sensory and communication disorders, social and emotional problems, physical and health related disorders, and giftedness. Includes field experience. Prerequisites: None.

    • Class Notes: Live Online courses meet with the instructor via the internet at regularly scheduled dates and times set in the schedule. Students will be required to use online virtual meeting software (Google Hangouts or WebEx, both of which require a camera). This "Live Online" experience approximates the regular in-person class experience. Attendance at online sessions will be expected according to the instructor's attendance policy, which will be stated in the syllabus.

Language and Literacy in the Context of Culture and Relationships (EED225) 3 Credits

Introduces children's language acquisition and literacy development. Exploration of the relationships among language, literacy, family, culture, and community. Study of educational practices and advocacy opportunities that support language acquisition, literacy development and the preservation of heritage languages. Prerequisites: None.
