CIS270: Essentials of Network and Information Security – 3 credits

Threats to security of information systems; responsibilities and basic tools for information security, including communication security, infrastructure security, organizational security and basic cryptography. Introduction to the language of network security and hardware, software and firmware components of an information security system for local, metropolitan, enterprise, and wide area networks. Helps prepare participants for the Comptia Security+ exam and the GIAC Security Essentials Certificate (GSEC). Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in BPC270 or CIS190 or CNT140AB or MST150++ or permission of Instructor.

    • Notes: Students taking this class have access to Gateway's on-campus Advanced Cyber Systems Lab (MA2108) to supplement their learning with hands-on activities and in-person tutoring.
      The class is a condensed, fast-paced instructional format, with all course competencies being covered in a compressed time-frame. The class does have a specific meeting schedule. However, students may be required to meet virtually with the instructor and/or classmates at agreed-upon dates and times throughout the course. Students are required to have access to a computer or mobile device, and Internet access. CANVAS is used as the learning management system.

      Students not logging into CANVAS on the first day of class may be withdrawn.
