      This two day, one night wilderness adventure is a "hands on" introduction to basic primitive living skills and wilderness survival. Students will learn about friction fire making, wild edible plants, primitive tool making, shelter building and primitive cooking. Beginning backpacking and hiking skills are recommended, but not required. Students are responsible for their own gear and food; details will be given at the first class meeting. Transportation is provided. First class meeting is on Tuesday, September 13 at 7 pm in room P2. Trip dates are September 23 and September 24.

      BACKPACKING/HAVASUPAI
      Hike, camp and experience the beauty of Havasupai Falls, Mooney Falls (over 300 feet), and Beaver Falls. Hiking, trail running, water play and relaxing. Conditioning is recommended. Qualifying hike is Saturday, September 24, 6:00am-11:00am, at Phoenix Mountain Preserve/Shaw Butte Mountain. Class leaves at 5:00pm on Thursday, October 6th and returns to GCC at 3:00pm on Sunday, October 9th. First class meeting is Wednesday, September 21st from 7:30pm to 8:30pm in FW-51. Field trip dates are October 6, 7, 8, 9. Special fee of $85.

Goldwater Lake Trail is a 9 mile forested trail shaded by dense ponderosa pine that occasionally give way to alligator juniper and chaparral-type vegetation. There are excellent views of both Upper and Lower Goldwater Lakes, as well as the high country to the east and west. This trail traverses a landscape of hills and ridges, where the valleys are green with Gambel oak, and a variety of grasses. The trail crosses Bannon Creek twice, which may be flowing in the spring. Birds are especially active in this area. Class meeting Tuesday September 20, 8:15pm in room C-104.

      This hiking class is for enthusiasts who want to hike from the South Rim to the North Rim of the Grand canyon (22 miles) in one day. This is very physically demanding and requires a conditioning period. Students registering for this class are highly recommended to also register for a Conditioning class, PED103HK 15733. Along with the conditioning class the student must also qualify in order to participate in this hiking class. First class meeting is Thursday, September 29th at 7:30pm-9:00pm in room P-2. The trip dates are October 14, 15 and 16. The class fee is $100 and will cover 2 nights lodging, park entry fee, Grand Canyon Special Use Permit, van shuttle and transportation.       CONDITIONING FOR GRAND CANYON RIM TO RIM OR PLEASURE HIKING
      Class 15733 is highly recommended for students to prepare for the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike (PED102HK 15756). Students can also take this class for the pure enjoyment of local hiking adventures. Hike times are 6:00am-12:00pm for August 27 - South Mtn/ Holbert, September 3 - North Mountain/Shaw Butte loop, September 10 - McDowell Mtn/Tom's Thumb, September 17 - Phx Mtn Preserve/Piestiwa Peak, and September 24 - Phx Mtn Preserve/Shaw Butte 3Xs.
