Volcanoes of Arizona -- Flagstaff Area, May 15-16, 2009

This course is an excellent opportunity for teachers and non-teachers alike to become more familiar with the geology and landscape of the many volcanoes of north-central Arizona, centered on the Flagstaff area. The class includes a half-day seminar on Saturday morning, May 15, 2010 in PS-167, followed by an overnight field expedition to observe and interpret various volcanic features and phenomena. The spectacular and rare vistas of Stoneman Lake. Sunset Crater, Cinder Lake, SP Crater, and Red Mountain (among others) will be explored with an eye towards the lava flows, volcanic mountains, and craters that these various types of eruptions have produced. During the seminar and field trip, which will be conducted both in English and Spanish, these volcanic landforms will be compared and contrasted with volcanic landforms on Jupiter+s moon lo, the most volcanically active body in the solar system. During the field trip, the class will visit locations pictured in geology and earth science textbooks. Ample opportunities for sample collections (where permitted) and photography will exist and are highly encouraged. Students must pay a lab fee of $25.00. Truck Trailer Driving II (TTD102) 3 Credits

Continued study of activities performed by professional drivers, with an emphasis on the safety of the driver, vehicle, cargo, and other road users. Training and certification in first aid and CPR skills. In-depth preparation for hazardous materials, doubles/triples, and tanker endorsements. Introduction to the pre-trip inspection. Discussion of tire chain use and demonstrated installation. Development of knowledge and skills in the areas of cargo documentation and trip planning. Discussion of issues pertaining to life on the road, communications, and personal resources. Includes information gathering and guidance for the job search. Prerequisites: TTD101.

Truck Trailer Driving Practicum (TTD104) 6 Credits

On-the-job practicum providing experience and training to develop advanced competencies in handling a tractor-trailer. Includes accurate reading and evaluation of vehicle systems and controls, advanced proficiency of control maneuvers, gear-shifting procedures, backing and parking, coupling and uncoupling, and driver communication principles. Also includes safe and proper search, speed, and space management; emergency maneuvers; night driving; hazardous weather driving; other hazardous situations, i.e., mountain driving, construction zones, city driving. Provides over-the-road administrative and non-driving experience. Covers non-driving tasks required of the driver. Includes planning trips, conducting vehicle inspections, preventive maintenance and servicing, handling and documenting cargo, record keeping, emergency procedures, customer service, and professionalism.
